INVITED LECTURE

Professor Jiri Jan

Signal and Image Data Processing
in Ultrasonic Imaging

Professor Jirí Jan

Dept. of Biomedical Engineering,
Faculty of Electrical Engineering
and Communication,
Brno University of Technology,
Brno, Czech Republic

Outline of Invited Lecture:

Processing of 2D image data

  • probe types and data acquisition

  • radio-frequency versus raw-video data processing

  • harmonic imaging

  • Doppler processing

  • format conversion

  • attenuation compensation

  • speckle suppression and resolution enhancement

  • movement and cine-loops

  • registration of images

Analysis of B-scan image data

  • segmentation and anatomic border delineation

  • texture analysis, tissue characterisation

  • blood flow and perfusion analysis

  • volume, shape and motion measurements based on 2D data

  • possibilities of view-, organ- and time-phase- identification

3D ultrasonography

  • need for and principles of 3D ultrasonography

  • 3D data acquisition methods

  • raw 3D data processing

  • 3D image data presentation

  • 4D data acquisition and processing

  • animation and stereo presentation, synthesised views

  • measurements based on 3D and 4D data

The lecture should serve both as an introduction to the field for those who are not particularly specialised in ultrasonography, and also, for those who are more deeply involved in the field, as an overview of different methodologies applied in this broad area either as routine procedures, or still primarily as research topics.

Acknowledgement

The overview lecture mirrors the basic background of a research project supported by the grant no. 102/01/0890 of the Grant Agency of Czech Republic and also by the grant of the Ministry of Education (Czech Republic) no. CEZ J22/98:26220001.
